The duration of the therapy will depend on a wide range of factors, such as the nature and gravity of the problems, treatment objectives, and cost/style considerations. Sessions are usually held on a weekly basis. Sessions can also be carried out on the basis of customer commitment according to the factors mentioned (e.g. once every two weeks, once a month).

Short-term treatment is defined as 12 or fewer sessions. These sessions can often be effective in meeting specific and targeted objectives. Click here to find out how short-term therapy can be best used.

Whether you prefer short-term or long-term sessions, there is evidence that the counseling process can help with mental health issues (click here for an example of short-term therapy outcomes, and click here for an example of long-term therapy outcomes). Usually, the number of sessions will be improved significantly by clients.

Counseling is always a collaborative process. While your therapist may recommend a frequency of sessions to effectively meet your goals, you have the ability to choose the frequency and number of sessions that you would like to have. Your therapist will work with you to modify your goals so that they can be met effectively during the session (s). Similarly, you and your therapist will be able to work together to determine the best time to end sessions.

Finally, you have the option of attending therapy sessions. Please consult with your therapist to determine the best arrangement for meeting your needs.
