Educational psychologists in Malaysia
An educational psychologist studies how a child learns, and why learning is harder for them than it should be. The work is diagnostic before it is anything else: standardised cognitive and academic testing, a history taken from home and from school, and observation, brought together into a profile of how this particular child takes information in, holds on to it, and uses it.
That is a different job from a school counsellor's. A counsellor supports a child through what they are feeling, and does it well. An educational psychologist answers a narrower question: whether a specific learning difficulty, an attention difficulty, a language difficulty or an intellectual profile explains what the school is seeing. That answer is what determines which help actually works, and it is usually what a school asks for before it grants accommodations.
Most parents reach us when the gap between effort and result has stopped making sense. A child who reads aloud fluently but cannot answer a question about the passage. A child whose marks fall away in one subject and hold in every other. A bright child who comes home from school with nothing left. None of those are behaviour problems, and none of them resolve with more tutoring.
